Descent to the Goddess

Step by step
Slowly I descend
Backwards down the stairs
Into the cave, the earth’s bosom
Returning to the past
While moving from the present
Into the future.

I am the archaeologist
Who studies the women
Who have lived before me
Seeking the signs
And the symbols
Of who we are
And what we have been.

Carefully I make my descent
Through the arch of the temple
Down white marble stairs
Built by great civilizations
Through the layers of history
Into the meaning of life and death
On my journey to enlightenment.

A candle I carry
In my righthand—
A single flame
To illuminate the
darkenss
And reveal the hidden
Transforming the
unconscious
Into the conscious.

Variation

There is but one Light
and one truth
manifested in infinite variety
and form.

She takes great delight
in shape shifting,
a changeling moving
through consciousness.

She becomes
what we need her to be—
awakening us,
calling softly,
inviting us to know her
in whatever form
we find meaning.

She is one
and many
simultaneously
becoming
embodied within
each one of us.

The Transient I

The I that once was is no longer

She dies with each exhalation
and is born again
with each new breath.

I long to hold her
each time she is reborn.

Her image is fleeting
for she is illusive,
evolving and changing.

A smoky illusion,
she disappears
like a ghost—
ethereal yet alive.

Full and ripe,
a fruit ready for the picking
aware and awake—
alive in this moment.

Moment

In the sacred moment
awareness unfolds
making meaning
out of nothing.

Attentive vigilance
becomes learning and
invitations to grow.

Moving water
flows through life
and each breath
we take
enters and awakens
within the soul.

Divinity re-discovered
emerges and unfolds,
a flowering abundance
of newness and life.
