Overview

During this 7 week group you will have an opportunity to experience and learn a method for using the symbolic language to glimpse the deep inner process of your psyche. This method is designed to increase self awareness and to enhance the inner life. The language of symbols is the oldest language we speak and comes from the deepest layers of our psyche. Most of us have lost the ability to translate symbols and images into meaning and have come to rely most heavily on our verbal language.

All forms of artistic expression can give a glimpse into the unconscious and provide us with insights into unknown aspects of ourselves and our life situations. Each group participant will have one private session to create a 3-dimensional picture using a tray of sand and a variety of miniature figures. The resulting sand tray scene will be viewed as a "waking dream" and during the 7 week group the symbolic content will be worked with in much the same way as we might approach a "night time dream." We will delve deeply into the symbolic content and the dynamic relationships between the images contained in each participant's sand tray scene. Written symbol material will be provided.

We offer these groups in the Fall and Spring. Each group is limited to 4 members. Before the group sessions begin, each participant will have one private session to create their sand tray scene. The group will meet for 7 two-hour sessions. The first session will focus on providing a general overview and group formation. During the next 4 weeks we will work in-depth with the symbolic material in each group member's sand tray creation. Our last two sessions will focus on summarizing our work together and group closure.
